Pre-K Frequently Asked Questions

What prekindergarten programs are offered?

Round Rock ISD offers full day prekindergarten for eligible four- and three-year-olds. Limited tuition-based prekindergarten spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. See Pre-K Programs Offered for more information.

Is prekindergarten a free program?
  • Prekindergarten is free for eligible four-year-olds. For those who do not meet eligibility criteria, limited tuition-based spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Prekindergarten for three-year-olds is tuition-based. Those who meet the eligibility criteria will receive a reduced rate. Again, limited tuition-based spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Is my child old enough to attend prekindergarten?

To be eligible for enrollment in a prekindergarten class, a child must be at least three years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year or four years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year and meet at least one of the following eligibility requirements below.

What are the eligibility requirements for prekindergarten?

To be eligible for enrollment in a prekindergarten class, a child must meet the age criteria listed above and meet at least one of the following eligibility requirements:

  • is educationally disadvantaged (which means a student eligible to participate in the national free or reduced lunch program), including students who receive SNAP, TANF; or
  • is unable to speak and comprehend the English language (based on English language assessment score); or
  • is homeless; or
  • is or ever has been in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (foster care); or
  • is the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States or is the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States who was injured or killed while serving on active duty

If your child meets the age criteria, but does not meet the eligibility requirements, the tuition-based prekindergarten program may be an option. Tuition-based spots are limited, and families are encouraged to complete enrollment as soon as possible.

What documents do I need for registration?
  • Parent/guardian identification (valid photo ID, driver’s license, passport, permanent resident card or naturalization papers)

  • Child’s social security card (if available)
  • Proof of residence (see examples below)
  • Proof of income (see examples below)
  • Immunizations record or exemption affidavit (must be up-to-date at the time of registration)

  • lease agreement (if renting), or
  • contract of sale or a tax statement, or
  • builder’s contract showing the projected completion date and utility deposit (if building new construction)
  • If living in another person’s residence, both the parent/guardian of the student and the person who lives/owns the residence will need to sign a notarized Affidavit of Residency form. Contact your home campus for this form.

Proof Of Income

  • two most recent paycheck stubs for every adult member of the household, or
  • if you are a business owner or self-employed, an IRS 1099 form can be used
How will I be notified if my child needs a language assessment?

If a language test is required, you will receive an email from the home campus to schedule an appointment for testing. Families will be contacted in the order that their online registration is received. (Per state guidance, children must be three years of age to be scheduled for the language test.)

When can I enroll my child?

Enrollment for the upcoming school year begins April 1 and remains open throughout the school year. Tuition-based spots are limited, and families are encouraged to complete enrollment as soon as possible.

How do I enroll my child in prekindergarten?

Other than age, the requirements to enroll in three-year-old prekindergarten are the same as for four-year-old prekindergarten. You will follow the same registration and enrollment process. Complete the online application and bring the required documents listed above to your local elementary school during school hours.

When will I find out if my child has been accepted in the prekindergarten program?

Parents must complete the online registration process through RRISD PowerSchool website. Online registration paperwork must include required documents to be reviewed and approved by the campus registrar. Campuses review and approve applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Questions about the status of your child’s application should be directed to the home campus.

My child meets the age criteria but does not meet the eligibility requirements listed above, how do I enroll in tuition-based prekindergarten?

If your child meets the age criteria but does not meet the eligibility requirements, a staff member will notify you if a tuition-based spot is available. Tuition-based spots vary based on the school. You must have previously completed the online application process and submitted all required documentation prior to enrolling in tuition-based prekindergarten. In addition, a Tuition Parent Agreement Form will need to be completed, and parents will have to pay a deposit.

How much is tuition?

For the 2024-2025 school year:

  • A non-refundable $100 deposit towards the first month’s tuition is due upon enrollment to secure a spot for your child. Once the deposit, the online registration form, and the completed Tuition Parent Agreement form are received, your child’s spot will be confirmed.
  • Tuition is $700 (monthly) for three- and four-year olds students who do not meet the eligibility criteria outlined by TEA.
  • Three-year-old students who do meet at least one of the eligibility criteria, a reduced rate will be applied at $350 (month).
  • Prekindergarten is free for eligible four-year-olds.

Where is my child’s school?

Use the RRISD School Zone Finder to locate your child’s school. Not all schools have prekindergarten three- and four-year old programs. Please see the RRISD Prekindergarten Feeder Pattern for more information on schools and programs offered.

Transfers

Parents may request a transfer to another school. RRISD evaluates each transfer request based on space and availability. Prekindergarten transfers are approved by the campus principal. Visit the RRISD Student Transfer Request website to apply for an in-district or out- of district transfer. If your child is in a prekindergarten four-year-old program, and you submitted a transfer for the current year, you do not need to resubmit your request.

Overflow

Due to limited space, school placement is determined by availability at the time of your completed registration. If the home campus is full, eligible prekindergarten students will be redirected to the closest available campus.

Campus Tours

Parents can contact the school’s office during business hours to inquire about a school tour.

Do attendance laws apply to prekindergarten?
Prekindergarten is not a mandatory program. However, if your child qualifies and is enrolled, he/she is subject to compulsory attendance law. Prekindergarten is a full day program, following a Monday-Friday schedule from 7:35 a.m. – 2:55 p.m.
Will my child receive meals at school?

Schools provide breakfast and lunch each day for a small cost. Prekindergarten students may apply for meal benefits (students do not automatically qualify for meals). For more information, please visit the Round Rock ISD Food Service website.

Will my child be able to ride the bus?

For eligible prekindergarten four-year-olds, transportation may be provided. Parents may request transportation services at the time of registration and will be notified by the campus if services are available based on your address. For more information, please visit the RRISD Transportation website.

Transportation is not provided for tuition-based prekindergarten three- and four-year olds.

Does my child need to be potty trained to attend school?
Per TEA, it is not mandatory that children be fully potty trained before entering a state-funded, public prekindergarten program. However, it is highly encouraged that families work diligently on potty training once their child is enrolled, if not before. Our educators will partner with families to support children at school as they work on toileting. Most classrooms are not equipped with changing tables, therefore it is strongly recommended that children wear pull-ups rather than diapers if needed.
What school supplies will my child need? When can I meet the teacher?
A list of school supplies and materials will be provided by the home campus. Schools will share information on “Meet the Teacher” type of events on their school’s website. Parents are encouraged to sign up to receive email/message alerts from their home campus to stay informed.
Is after school child care available?
After school childcare options vary depending on your child’s home school. You will need to visit the school’s website or contact the main office during school hours to find out more information.
What if my child needs speech or special education services?

Students who qualify for speech and/or other special education services may receive services in prekindergarten. Please notify the school at the time of registration. More information about services and programs for speech and special education can be found on the Special Education and Child Find websites.
